Although there is no way to precisely verify the original symbolic meaning of the triquetra, it is widely believed to have represented the three stages of womanhood: maiden, mother and crone. Later the triquetra was often adapted to symbolize the Christian trinity. We use a sharply pointed version of the knot that resembles an arrowhead, thus the name "Gainne", which means
'arrowhead' in the Manx Gaelic dialect.

The D-ring, featuring a pair of human arms tapering into tiny hands holding a horizontal bar, is adapted from a belt buckle found on a Celtic bog man from approximately 1100 AD.
